Egley Train Boise Instructors

Michael Egley
Head Instructor

Michael Egley

Born in 1989 in a small rural town in Pennsylvania named Kittanning, my efforts on the football field and in the classroom landed me admission and a scholarship to Columbia University in the City of New York.

In 2011 I graduated cum laude from Columbia University with a degree in financial economics where I played college football.

In 2013, after listening to a Joe Rogan podcast, I started my Jitsu Jitsu training under Renzo Gracie Pittsburgh. In 2016 I quit my senior financial analyst position in Pittsburgh, PA – leaving a $90K salary – to pursue Jiu Jitsu full-time as a competitor and instructor. I saw how much Jiu Jitsu positively benefited my life in terms of confidence, social networks, fitness, self-discovery, and personal development. The more I trained the better I was as a human. I knew I wanted to spread Jiu Jitsu and build a community of like-minded individuals.

In 2017 I moved to Southern California, the “mecca” of modern day Jiu Jitsu, to test my abilities and to learn from the best Jiu Jitsu academies in the world.

In 2019 I received my brown belt from Carlson Gracie in Temecula, CA.

In 2021 I received my black belt from Keenan Cornelius in San Diego, CA. Keenan is an internationally known and respected Jiu Jitsu competitor with over 265k followers online. He also started jiujitsux.com – a leading internet website of Jiu Jitsu instructionals taught by the best practitioners in the country.

May 30, 2021 my first son, Elliot, with my partner Emily, is born.

June 2021 we move to Kuna, Idaho to raise our son near family and bring world-class Jiu Jitsu instruction to Boise.

Testimonials

Mike Egley is an amazing coach—a super technical practitioner, a gifted instructor, and a caring human being. Boise has a thriving jiu-jitsu community, but Egley Train is incomparable even in such strong market. Egley trained at Carlos Gracie and then got his black belt from Keenan Cornelius. He brings a wealth of experience and technical prowess in both gi and no gi training. He’s incredibly well versed in the fundamentals but also has a gift for understanding and incorporating advanced and emerging techniques. The gym is clean, safe, and welcoming. The location is easy to access right off the freeway interchange at Cole Rd. The instruction is precise, practical, and digestible. The open mat rolling has got a great tempo–perfectly balanced with technique, energy, and safety. And the team has the right cultural balance of respect and care without being overly stuffy or stringently hyper-traditional. All levels will benefit from training here, whether your a hobbyist or a competitor—-a novice or advanced. You’ll be welcome and you’ll have a home. Do yourself a favor and check out this incredible new gym..”

– Rick Jepson

“A great place for a beginner to come and learn new skills and improve quickly. As a woman I felt very comfortable and welcomed by everyone there. Super friendly environment and kid friendly .”

– Emily Norris

I dropped by while visiting in town and had an awesome experience. I highly recommend checking Egley Train out for anyone wanting to try out Jiu Jitsu or if you’re looking for a gym in the area. Michael’s full of knowledge and the environment is very friendly. From great explanations on the fundamentals to helping diagnose some more technical moves, Michael and team were great. I found the members of the gym to be very willing to help and share their knowledge as well. This is a solid place to pick up the game or get great sessions and rolls in with good competition. I’ll definitely be back in the future!
